🫣 RIP the Secret Link | Bulletin #89

This week: giving thanks 🦃 a table for one 🍽️ and a cheers-worthy contest 🍻

Often low on the priority list when setting up a country, it’s difficult when a group disagrees on what aviary species should be the national bird. If Benjamin Franklin got his wish, the national bird of the United States might have been a turkey, which compared to an eagle Franklin deemed  “a much more respectable bird.” One can only wonder how he would feel knowing his beloved bird has now become the national American Thanksgiving meal instead.

FRIENDSGIVING SUSHI

Since bringing turkey and pumpkin pie is frowned upon by customs, our Thanksgiving meal is looking a little different this year. We’ve just landed in Tokyo, Japan, for the new AWA exhibition and are currently replacing mashed potatoes with maki rolls. Before we begin pouring the soy sauce, we just want to give a brief shout-out to our AWA Community and readers—we are so thankful for all of you and can’t do what we do without you. We are so grateful that we get to meet so many of you amazing people from all over the world and find stories to share with you each day.

And now back to our regularly scheduled programming. 😉

TINY INTERVIEW SERIES: MATTHEW DICKEY

Our friend and AWA Ambassador, Matthew Dickey AKA @streetscapecurator, has been obsessed with architecture from a young age. The man behind our Coastal Postal Roadtrip, Matt is a preservationist based in Boston where he paints, takes photographs, and well, works to preserve some of Boston’s historic, cultural, and architectural heritage. You can find Matthew biking around Bean Town and capturing the city's historic buildings on his phone (and painting some of them, too!)

Shelburne Museum 📍 Shelburne, Vermont 📸 Marjorie Becker Photography

What is art? Such a complex question deserves a complex answer. Andy Warhol once said that art is anything you can get away with. Sometimes the simple act of placing an item in a museum and calling it art is sufficient. The latter method of distinguishing masterpieces was more parallel to the ideology of Electra Havemeyer Webb when she established the Shelburne Museum in 1947…

Ichiran Ramen 📍 Kyoto, Japan 📸 Nicolas Bertrand

At Thanksgiving, you’re supposed to focus on everyone around you and feel thankful. At this restaurant, your appreciation should only be concentrated on the food. With humble origins, this ramen restaurant is home to one of the most interesting dining experiences that you’ve ever heard of…
