Did you know the names of the poles can help you remember which critters live there? The word “Arctic”, derived from the Greek word meaning “bear”, was given to the north pole for its bear-shaped constellation. As the starry grouping can’t be seen from the southern tip of the world, it’s become known as “Antarctic” or “no bear”. The name coincidentally rings true as you won’t find any Arctic polar bears amongst those Antarctic penguins.

WE ADOPTED A PENGUIN!

The UK Antarctic Heritage Trust works to promote greater public engagement with Antarctica, and on July 28th, they are celebrating 30 years of conservation and inspiration! Check them out to learn more about their adventure stories, and perhaps even adopt a penguin. (We did!)

The amount of folks who have submitted their own videos for our “Puzzling in Puzzling Places” is truly confounding–who knew there could be so many peculiar places to puzzle! Roald Amundsen knew he was destined for adventure, however, his mother had coaxed him into a medical career to keep him safe. Upon her passing, Amundsen immediately dropped his schooling in favor of joining Arctic voyages (sorry, Mom), and proved Proving himself to be a more than capable sailor. But the ambitious adventurer had his sights on even greater achievements that would have his name immortalized into one of the greatest known explorers…

Playing all day in a frozen white wonderland, a cozy hut for lodging is as important as one’s warmest mittens. On the world’s 7th continent, where winds can whip past at 100mph, and temperatures can dip to -55 degrees celsius, an outdoor adventurer must have a warm spot to wait out the storm. Comfortably packed amongst the snow, Damoy Point is home to the southernmost waiting room in the world…
