This week: restoration tales 🏛️ and perhaps the coolest lamp ever 💡
If we told you that Ohio is home to the country’s second largest performing arts center would you believe us? Well it's true! Cleveland’s Playhouse Square is home to 11 lavishly decorated theaters, which were nearly lost to the wrecking ball decades ago. Thankfully, the Friends of Playhouse Square stepped in to ensure you can have still have a ball at a performance instead!

MELBOURNE HERE WE COME
Next week on September 18th, the doors of the AWA Exhibition will open on its first stop Down Under! With Australia’s second city playing host to a plethora of architectural gems, a “Jazz Moderne” McDonald’s, and cows in trees, we’ll be right at home in Melbourne. Grab your tickets here, and we’ll see you there!
O-HI-O, THERE!
We recently ventured back to “The Land” (The “CLE”? The Cleeve?) with our architecturally awesome BFFs at DLR Group. And yes, Cleveland certainly does deserve a second trip. Don’t believe us? Go ahead and take a peek at our guide. We’ll hold.
GREAT BARS OF NYC
From haunts frequented by Hemingway to taverns that somehow stayed open during Prohibition, there are 25,000 bars in NYC and the ever amazing Karla and James Murray have curated phenomenal photos and fun facts about their top picks. So venture forward dear friends, pen and paper (or Notes app) in hand and explore a taste of our Top 10 here.
In honor of our Melbourne Exhibition, we collected some special stops along the Australian shores. The only place in the world where the same name applies to both the sovereign nation and continent in its domain, we hope this assembly of stories sparks your curiosity in the country (and continent).

RESTORATION STORIESSometimes a dilapidated bathroom is more than just cracked tiles and peeling paint. But it takes a creative mind and a whole lot of effort to reimagine a room as it once was. So how is it done? Let’s take a closer look into the artistry of restoring historic places, uncovering secret wallpaper, and using collages to piece the past back together… |
SPECIAL SHADESToday we share 5 questions with the one and only Ivy Karlsgodt — perhaps better known as Ace of Shades. Ivy creates magical one-of-a-kind lamp shades out of her Brooklyn apartment, and we were so fortunate to commission a piece from her as part of our Curious Creator series with Hendrick's Gin. Ivy was super kind to share with us insights about her process, where she finds inspiration, and which AWA location she would love to design shades for! |
This week we’re giving away our coveted AWA Analog Clock to keep track of time, and hopefully help us not be late for class, work, or a very important date. And be quick to click because these lovely yellow timekeepers are only available for a very short amount of … time.
